The Science of Beard Oil

The Science of Beard Oil

The beard has risen in pop culture like a phoenix rising from the ashes, but with this wild (facial) growth also comes a wild responsibility: to love and care for your beard, as if it were your child. That means trimming, shaping but more importantly, keeping those manly locks refreshed and moisturized.

Beard Oil uses a blend of fragrance and oils to nourish, soften and moisturize the hair. Common ingredients used in this moisturizing product include argon oil, grape seed oil, castor oil and vitamin E, all which penetrate the hair follicles under the skin and reduce irritation by softening the base of the follicles and moisturizing the skin beneath.

Beard oil aims to mimic the secretion of the natural oils in the skin, such as sebum, produced by the sebaceous glands. The sebum secretions are unique to humans, as they produce an oily residue on the skin which retains moisture and protects the body against bacteria. The downside to relying on this is that the sebum produces a strong odor when it comes in contact with surface bacteria. With beard oil, on the other hand, the blend of essential oils will leave you smelling like a million bucks, all day long.

Another benefit of beard oil is its ability to soften to the beard and make it more manageable to trim and shape, because the last thing you want is to look like a hipster Neanderthal.

Essential oils, absolutes and extracts are used as an aromatic base for the beard oil to give off a masculine aroma, with popular oils fragranced with notes of musk, rose and woody scents. Beard oil should be used daily, ideally after a morning shower as open skin pores will absorb the oil easier, leaving you with a healthy, moisturized, sexy beard that’ll turn heads left, right and center.
